Is Japanese knotweed poisonous to guniea pig and rabbits?
I have 2 guinea pigs and a rabbit, who are currently living inside, we are going to put them outside when it gets warm and there is a very large space at the bottom of the garden but has a lot of Japanese knotweed in it I was wondering if it would harm the small furries, I've looked online but can't find a definite answer.
Jennifer,
I work for Invasive Weeds agency, we deal with a lot of Japanese knotweed and I can confirm that it definitely won't harm any of your pets. It doesn't contain any toxic sap like some other invasive species such as Giant hogweed and a lot of livestock graze on it, sheep especially. You can even find recipes on line for things like knotweed muffins, apparently it tastes like rhubarb but I cant say I've ever tried any.

THE PRESS DO NOT ALWAYS GIVE YOU THE FULL STORY. YOU HAVE TO LOOK DEEPER TO GET THE TRUTH. AND HERE IS THE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE ABOUT JAPANESE KNOTWEED FROM A NEW SCIENTIST, WHO THANKFULLY HAS NOT BEEN CORRUPTED BY MONEY:
New Scientist magazine reader bucks the trend
According to New Scientist reader Ruth Burroughs, the dreaded weed isn’t all bad. Here’s what she said in the magazine’s 5th July 2014 edition:
“I was concerned to read the diatribe against Japanese knotweed. While not wishing to defend some of knotweed’s thuggish habits, your article was in my view both biased and unscientific. To describe it as having the “biodiversity value of concrete” is absurd. It is in fact a valuable nectar source for many insects, including honey bees. Its phytochemistry is complex and fascinating and beyond the scope of this letter, but suffice it to say it has broad antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activity as well as being a rich source of resveratrol, a compound claimed to have many health benefits. The plant has a long history of use in Japan as a medicine and a food source.”

THANKS TO YOU TUBE, I FOUND DR MICHAEL GREGER AND HIS FREE, NUTRITION FACTS. I AM NOW ASTHMA FREE!
And cannot thank You Tube and Dr Greger enough!
When I wrote the Butterfly Lullaby book, I donated £1 per book to Cystic Fibrosis for a cure. Now I know, thanks to Dr Michael Greger and You Tube, that PLANTS HEAL ILLNESS! They are our true medicine. I hope to help fund INDEPENDENT Scientific Research!
"I suffer every day, but I never complain!"
With some luck, I will be able to get hold of Dr Michael Greger, and help save Jodie, and others like her with illnesses that can be cured through diet. If Asthma can be cured, then surely so can Cystic Fibrosis. I know of people that have cured Cancer. Anything is possible, if you just open your mind, and do the research. Science, as Dr Greger mentions, gets lost down the rabbit hole. No profit in fruit and veg! But plenty of profit in keeping people ill with medications.
IF DR. MICHAEL GREGER IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR GOOGLE, HE IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS!

Donate to support independent nutrition research
Money has had a corrupting influence in the field of nutritional science. Financial considerations decide which foods get studied, which studies get published, and which findings get disseminated to the public. And when a company funds its own research, you always have to worry if the inherent conflict of interest is biasing the results. Public funding is on the decline, so what about truly public funding–crowdfunding science? If that appeals to you, please consider chipping in.
