DYSLEXIC BOOKWORM

"If I - a British Dyslexic Mum can turn our Dyslexic daughter into a Bookworm - when she could hardly read, write or spell in school, then anyone can do it!" 

Our daughter struggled to read, write and spell in school. She hated reading! Now she collects books and reads all the time. Melody writes songs, loves Creative Writing, draws, plays the Cello, Guitar and Sings. What is there not to love about being Dyslexic?

School books were boring. Now Melody is reading, and is collecting the Harry Potter books etc. Here is a drawing Melody created of one of the characters, do you recognize her?

I CAN RELATE TO THE HARRY POTTER CHARACTER

I can relate to the Harry Potter Character, as my Grandmother was a child orphan. Made to eat and sleep in a shed with her brothers, treated like slaves, just like HARRY. Who would have thought this possible in the UK? NAN read to escape from her dreadful childhood. I believe Nan was also a Dyslexic Bookworm as she struggled in school. Imagine finally being homed with a loving family, to only be told you were failing in school; therefore, were not allowed any happiness with a family that truly loved and cared about you. The authorities placed my Nan and her brothers with more abusive, uncaring people. Somethings never change.  Nan got in debt helping children all around the world, because she knew the child care system was broken. Debt now paid back.  

CREATIVE AUDIO VISUAL FAMILY

We are a CREATIVE AUDIO VISUAL THINKING family, this world labels Disabled ... Dyslexic. But guess what, we are so much more than that. And so are you! Dyslexia is not only a GIFT, but it is also a Superpower.  

Dyslexics are Problem Solvers

I LOVE PROBLEM SOLVING! IT IS A SHAME THE NHS AND EDUCATION SYSTEM DO NOT ALLOW US TO HELP SOLVE THE EDUCATION PROBLEM AND HELP MAKE READING FUN, NOT STRESSFUL! 

MY DAUGHTER (MELODY ANGEL) HEALED MY BROKEN HEART

I feel I can relate to Harry from Harry Potter, because even though my parents are not dead, when your parents split up, it is as if your living with half a heart. My childhood was one amazing magical adventure. I got to explore the world as a child and had so much love. My stepfather, who I see as a real father, and my mother and grandparents (family/friends) gave me so many wonderful happy childhood memories. But like Harry, you cannot let go of not having the perfect family as a child. You still want your blood mother and father together. However, as a adult, I am so thankful that my biological parents split up. Sadly, not all children get to have the outstanding childhood I did. And I find that very sad indeed.  

When I became a MOTHER, that is when my half heart healed. Our Melody (daughter) gave me so much love, and joy, that I stopped feeling broken and now feel whole. I cannot thank her enough for all the love she has given me and her father over the years. 

EVERY CHRISTMAS OUR MELODY DRAWS A FAMILY PICTURE FOR US

The fact that our daughter takes time out of her busy schedule to create a piece of art (family portrait) each year, which takes her ages to finish, makes me feel like the luckiest Mother on this Planet. She is the perfect daughter. And I love her more than words can ever express.

THE MESSAGE IS ALWAYS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE SPELLING AND GRAMMAR. KINDNESS IS THE KEY!

If you praise a child and do not make them feel stupid, they can achieve anything!  

HOW I TURNED OUR DYSLEXIC DAUGHTER INTO A BOOKWORM

To create a Dyslexic Bookworm you need KINDNESS, PATIENCE AND THE FUN FACTOR. Work on your child's strengths and interests to make reading enjoyable. 

First, go to the Library and let your child/grandchild etc pick out four books. I guarantee 
they will choose picture books, and books with fun rhymes. The books will be nothing like the reading books you get in school. School books sent me to sleep, so I have no idea how they were supposed to engage a child who hates reading. 

Now comes the fun part, you turn the storybooks into singing stories like Melody did:

WRITE DOWN EVERY WORD YOUR CHILD CANNOT SING OR READ

Your job is to write down every word your child struggles to sing or read. Then ask the child to write down the words three times. Next get the child to have a go at spelling the words out loud.

When you have Dyslexia yourself, you know when your child is Dyslexic; therefore, you do not need a Dyslexia test. Living with something yourself, you become an expert and find strategies to deal with it.

MOST DYSLEXIC CHILDREN HAVE SHORT MEMORIES

It is important to remember that most Dyslexic children have short memories. So a word they may learn one day, they could forget the next. The key is to never give up! Keep trying and they will get there in the end. Also remember our children are not race horses. They have different needs and have a right to learn at the pace that suits them.

Don't panic. Our daughter could not read until I took her out of school. She started to read when she was ten years old.

Here is Melody getting really excited because she got a book for her birthday. You tell me how many Dyslexic children want a book for their birthday? Not many.

Then she finds out the book is from her favourite American Author (when she was younger)

Melody begged me to Home Educate her. First I got her moved class. She was ok for a while. She did have some kind teachers. Two teachers loved children and had school pets.

But here is the thing. Melody would be stressed out all day in school with too much pressure. Expected to learn at the same pace as all the other children. When she came home I used to make sure she did something fun and promoted what she was good at, and that was ART. Here is Melody drawing her toy collection:

Our daughter is learning to play the Cello. Her Cello teacher studied with Jacqueline Du Pre. They had the same Cello Tutor. Melody is learning to play the guitar. She sings, and creates original songs. And is an amazing Creative Writer. Not to mention she is a great artist. What more could a mother wish for.

The song is about how SAD Lockdown has been for her and others. And how being an only child can also be very lonely. We feel for all people that live alone because they have no family, or have lost loved ones. God bless them all!

That is so sad. How many other children are still suffering today? I cannot thank Shane enough for speaking out about his Dyslexia and education:

Both London Mums Magazine Founder and I would rather have a child mentally healthy, than one that has been mentally destroyed with too much Academic enforcement.

SOME ACADEMICS CAN MAKE BIG MISTAKES
ITA ENGLISH IS JUST ONE OF THESE MANY MISTAKES

I was taught ITA English Twaddle. An Alien backward language that made no sense at all. It is amazing I can spell at all as I had to learn to read, write and spell all over again later on. I taught myself to type, and worked my way up from Receptionist to Managing Directors Secretary for a top Architectural Firm in London.

Nanny K from Seesingsay is Dyslexic. Now she should be in charge of Education in Primary School. We both agree that forcing children to read out loud in class is bullying, especially when teachers know full well the child is struggling. 

Did you know that poor people used Rhymes to get messages across to others to warn them of danger. Rhymes are great for Dyslexics.

Councillor Kevin Griffiths is a HERO. Not many Councils in the UK support Creative Children/Teens. I cannot thank him enough for celebrating our daughters gifts. How I wish he had more power in Council and Government because he is a man I really admire. Someone that goes above and beyond for our children, families and communities. Nothing is too much trouble.

wrote this book called Radical Home Education. It is well worth reading. What a mother, I admire her greatly. Home Educating your child and giving them peace of mind, is something that is not respected in the UK. But then personally, I feel this Country suffers from Academic bullying.  Instead of looking at the media. Listen to real life stories. They matter. We are real. The Media is not always kind, and can twist things for financial gain.  

I am reading Susan's book now. Having worked in the school system myself, I feel that good teachers do not have a voice. So I am happy to share this comment in Susan's book from a Former College Lecturer:

Gifted Musicians who cannot do maths 'fail.'
Talented Athletes who struggle with reading and writing 'fail.'
Even the social aspect of schooling, learning how to deal with a variety of people in a myriad of situations on a daily basis, disadvantages the shy and socially awkward children who are often victimised or bullied because they are 'different' from the popular, confident ones.

HOME EDUCATION ROCKS

Well our daughter, Melody Angel, succeeded and passed her Music Theory Grade 5 exam, and got a distinction. She had to study more than the usual person due to her poor memory, which is all part of being Dyslexic. The Exam system is unfair. I refuse to get my daughter statemented with Dyslexia to get her extra time in Exams. She is not Disabled ... Dyslexic. Melody is a genius like her father. We are more than a Disabled TITLE! Dyslexia is the reason so many children/adults are musically GIFTED. 
 
Her father is a self-taught musician. Genius. 

STEVEN SPIELBERG IS AN AMAZING CREATIVE AUDIO VISUAL THINKER, THIS WORLD LABELS DYSLEXIC! 

RICHARD BRANSON IS DYSLEXIC. HE PROMOTES IT:

BUT I BELIEVE SHE WILL PASS HER MUSIC THEORY EXAM

Maths is a subject our daughter has always struggled with. Bad memory etc. However, I believe she will pass her Music Theory Exam thanks to Home Education. Giving her a Safe Space to study with no distractions. Melody took her Exam yesterday. On the test runs she got 74 out of 75 correct. But in an exam setting where you are pressured with finishing that exam in a limited time (Typical Academic rules). You panic. She rushed through the exam because of the time limit. And her mind went blank. Melody forgot to go over the answers in the time she had left. For me, I don't care if they say she has failed or passed, because she is always a winner in my eyes. I don't need a piece of paper to tell me our daughter is bright, clever and talented. I love her just the way she is! As a mother, I am proud of her beyond words!

Hard to believe children were physically harmed in State School, the Welsh Not is a prime example.
They got stopped. Now it is time stop the mental bullying!

When I was 16, I got paid to go to Art College to study Graphic Design. My friend got a job in Graphic Design thanks to this FREE Education. All thanks to the very kind Tax Payer.

What is a point of a Government Service (paid by the Tax Payer) which fails our Children's Education, and refuses to help support Small Business? The BAD men in Government make life for single mothers, children and struggling ARTISTS very difficult indeed and need sacking! My small business got destroyed by Evil British BULLYING Elite MEN. The Government were giving out free IT support to small businesses, but I got nothing because I am a MOTHER.
